Soft Plastic Recycling and Mono-Material (PE/PP) Pouches

Soft Plastic Recycling and Mono-Material (PE/PP) Pouches

More and more brands are actively searching for mono-material packaging. With strict new recycling rules in Europe (CEFLEX, PPWR) and Australasia (APCO, ARL), traditional mixed-plastic pouches are quickly becoming a liability. To avoid heavy packaging taxes and earn the “Recycle at Store” label, upgrading to a fully recyclable mono-material structure is now a necessity.

If you sell products in flexible pouches, you need to know about these changes. In this guide, Gozen Packaging breaks down the new rules of soft plastic recycling. We’ll show you how mono-material pouches future-proof your brand.

What is Traditional Multi-Layer Packaging?

The standard flexible packaging has been the multi-layer laminate. It is characterized by combining different types of plastics and metals to achieve maximum product protection and print quality.

What is Traditional Multi-Layer Packaging
  • Outside Layer: Typically PET (Polyester) for a glossy finish, heat resistance during sealing, and excellent printability.
  • Middle Barrier: Often AL (Aluminum Foil) or VMPET (Metallized PET) to completely block oxygen and moisture.
  • Inner Sealing: Usually PE (Polyethylene) or CPP (Cast Polypropylene) to provide strong heat-sealing properties.

Why Standards are Getting Stricter

While these multi-layer structures (PET/AL/PE) offer great protection, they are a nightmare for recycling facilities because the different layers cannot be easily separated.

Soft plastic recycling relies on mechanical processes (melting and re-pelletizing). Because PET melts at around 250°C and PE melts at around 130°C, they cannot be processed together. The un-melted PET and Aluminum create impurities, causing the recycled plastic film to break or degrade. Consequently, these mixed-material pouches are rejected by recyclers and sent straight to landfills.

In the past, some regional guidelines allowed a pouch to be labeled “recyclable” if it contained at least 70% of a primary plastic. Today, to achieve high-quality “film-to-film” recycling, global standards have shifted:

Australia (APCO & PREP)

Recent updates require the primary polymer to be at least 80% of the total weight to earn the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL).

Europe (CEFLEX)

Strongly advocates for flexible packaging to be ≥90% mono-material (PE or PP).

If your current packaging contains more than 5-10% of incompatible materials (like PET, Nylon, or Foil), it will likely be classified as “Not Recyclable” (destined for the landfill red bin), which can hurt your brand image and retail compliance.

Enter Mono-Material Packaging

To meet the new 80-90% purity thresholds, the industry has shifted to Mono-Material pouches. “Mono” means one. The entire bag is engineered using just one single plastic family, maximizing recyclability without losing shelf appeal.

Enter Mono-Material Packaging

There are two main types:

1. The Universal Standard: Mono-PE (Polyethylene)

Mono-PE is the undisputed “King” of soft plastic recycling. Our Mono-PE pouches are engineered with a >95% pure PE structure, utilizing advanced MDO-PE (stretched PE) for the outer layer to ensure excellent printability without stretching.

  • The Safest Bet for Global Compliance: PE is the most widely accepted material in “Store Drop-off” programs globally. Whether you are targeting the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) or European CEFLEX standards, our >95% Mono-PE guarantees a green light, helping you avoid future packaging taxes.
  • Perfect For: PE is incredibly tough and performs beautifully in cold temperatures. It is the ultimate choice for coffee (with a PE valve), frozen foods, pet food (handles heavier weights perfectly), and liquid spout pouches.

2. The Lightweight Champion: Mono-PP (Polypropylene)

Our Mono-PP pouches are engineered with a >95% pure PP structure, completely free of Aluminum and Nylon. They can be dropped directly into local PP recycling streams in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

  • Beat the Packaging Tax: With the EU PPWR regulations set to take effect in August 2026, and the New Zealand Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme imposing strict limits on multi-layer structures, our >95% Mono-PP helps you stay compliant with both the European ≥90% requirement and the AU/NZ ≥80% baseline.
  • Perfect For: This structure is the ideal lightweight solution for products under 500g. It is perfect for snacks, tea, cosmetics, personal care items, and toy accessories, especially when you need a highly transparent window.

Can Mono-Material Pouches Protect My Product?

The biggest question brands ask when switching to mono-materials is: “Will my product go stale without Aluminum foil?”

The answer is no. We can achieve high-barrier performance while maintaining recyclability through smart engineering:

The EVOH Solution

We incorporate a micro-layer of EVOH (Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol) into the PE structure. EVOH provides an outstanding barrier against oxygen. To comply with strict recycling standards (like APCO and CEFLEX), Gozen Packaging ensures that the EVOH content does not exceed 5% of the total pouch weight. This minimal amount does not disrupt the PE recycling stream.

Advanced Coatings

We also offer AlOx (Aluminum Oxide) or SiOx (Silicon Oxide) coated PE/PP films. These transparent, microscopic coatings provide foil-like barrier properties but are so thin that they do not affect the mono-material classification.

what we offer for your brand

Upgrading to mono-material packaging is about more than just passing a recycling test or avoiding taxes. It is a strategic move to build a truly sustainable brand. By choosing Mono-PE or Mono-PP, you actively support the circular economy. Instead of ending up in landfills, these pouches can be melted down and turned into new products, keeping valuable resources in use.

Furthermore, flexible pouches already require much less energy to make and ship compared to heavy glass or metal. Making them 100% recyclable creates the ultimate low-carbon packaging. Most importantly, today’s shoppers care about the planet. Proudly displaying a recycling label on your pouch shows your commitment to the earth, helping you build deep trust and long-term loyalty with your customers.
